{"id":296980,"date":"2023-11-20T13:24:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-20T13:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/?p=296980"},"modified":"2023-11-20T13:24:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T13:24:59","slug":"mayor-of-liverpool-writes-to-premier-league-over-everton-punishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/soccer\/mayor-of-liverpool-writes-to-premier-league-over-everton-punishment\/","title":{"rendered":"Mayor of Liverpool writes to Premier League over Everton punishment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Everton&#8217;s ten-point deduction for breaching financial rules is &#8216;LUDICROUS&#8217; insists the mayor of Liverpool&#8230; who in a letter to the Premier League calls for them to &#8216;not unfairly penalise the club&#8217;s players and supporters&#8217;<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Everton were handed a 10-point deduction for breaking financial rules<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The mayor of Liverpool has expressed his &#8216;deep concern&#8217; over the punishment\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Chris Sutton is stunned by Ian Ladyman&#8217;s England Euro XI: It&#8217;s All Kicking Off<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotheram, has written to the Premier League to express his \u2018deep concern and opposition\u2019 to the decision to hand Everton with a 10-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules.<\/p>\n<p>Everton were referred to an independent commission in March for an alleged breach relating to 2021-22 and a hearing found that the club outspent financial guidelines and should be punished with a sporting sanction.<\/p>\n<p>It plunged Sean Dyche\u2019s side to 19th in the table, above Burnley on goal difference alone, and the club immediately confirmed its intention to appeal against the decision, calling the sanction \u2018wholly disproportionate and unjust\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>And now metro mayor of the city Rotheram has written to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters. \u2018I am writing to express my deep concern and opposition to today\u2019s decision by the Premier League Panel to deduct 10 points from Everton Football Club,\u2019 he wrote in a letter seen by Mail Sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The sanction imposed is not only unprecedented but a wholly disproportionate one too. While I understand, and indeed support, the importance of maintaining discipline and upholding the integrity of the sport, it is crucial to ensure that any punitive measures are proportionate and just. I do not believe that this punishment fits the crime.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/12\/78020219-12770749-image-a-40_1700484385982.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Everton were hit with a\u00a010-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/20\/12\/78020225-12770749-image-m-42_1700484407562.jpg\" height=\"611\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Mayor of Liverpool, Steve Rotheram, insists the &#8216;punishment doesn&#8217;t fit the crime&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The decision to deduct 10 points from Everton is excessive considering the club\u2019s willingness and proactivity in collaborating with the Premier League to ensure all dealings were FFP compliant when it was clear they were close to breaching the rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There are a number of mitigating factors in Everton\u2019s transgression in relation to debt ceilings that are in effect geo-political and therefore outside of their control.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As many people have pointed out, the punishment imposed appears severe for the charge in question and sets a new precedent. When compared with sanctions handed to other clubs for financial infringements it surpasses previous penalties.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In 2010, when Portsmouth entered administration, a case of serious mismanagement, they were hit with only a 9 point penalty. For falling into administration a second time in three years, in 2012, they faced a 10 point deduction.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The implication that Everton\u2019s actions are somehow are more egregious is frankly, ludicrous. I completely support the club\u2019s appeal and would urge you to take a more balanced approach and consider alternative forms of punishment that do not unfairly penalise the club&#8217;s players and supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As a founding member of both the Football League and Premier League, Everton are an important part of the fabric of English football.
