Tottenham have drawn up a five-man shortlist to fix their selection crisis at the back, including three Manchester United targets. Spurs will need to sign at least one centre-back in January with Micky van de Ven out injured until next year.

The Dutchman has proved to be an excellent addition to Ange Postecoglou’s side since stepping through the door in the summer but is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines after tearing his hamstring during Tottenham’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Eric Dier, who has playing in Van de Ven’s place, is nearing the end of his deal and is free to explore pre-contract agreements with other clubs in January providing Spurs don’t renew his contract before then – which isn’t expected to happen.

It is therefore crucial that Tottenham get their transfer strategy in place ahead of what will surely be a season-defining winter transfer window. According to the Daily Mail, Spurs recently held a transfer meeting to discuss potential options in the heart of their defensive line.

AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, Morato of Benfica, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite and Sporting Lisbon star Goncalo Inacio have all reportedly been identified as key centre-back targets.

The latter three are all admired by Man Utd, who will be prepared to battle it out with the north Londoners for their signatures in the New Year. Guehi and Branthwaite are of particular interest to the Red Devils although both will be difficult pry away from their respective clubs.
