Burnley boss Vincent Kompany says he’s got the right character to cope with any stress that comes from being bottom of the table.

Kompany was a serial winner as Manchester City captain and led Burnley to the Championship title last season but it’s a different story at the moment with The Clarets picking up only four points off 12 games.

Ahead of Saturday’s clash with West Ham at Turf Moor, the relaxed Belgian retorted: ‘You’re asking the wrong person about feeling pressure.

‘I’m a fairly good person to deal with pressure. It seems like it almost motivates me even more.

‘It feels like we’re entering a different phase of the season, that’s true, and I can only say I’m actually really looking forward to it.

He said every survival story he had heard included drama, but focused on revival in the season

‘I just enjoy watching these guys train every day and we’re seeing what they’re able to do. All I want is for them to be able to show it at the weekend. So we will be fine, I’m sure.’

Burnley became the first top-flight team in history to lose their first six matches at home in a season but have to put that dismal record right with Sheffield United also visiting after The Hammers.

Kompany is preparing for a battle until the end of the season to keep his side in the division.

‘I’ve spoken to managers who told me the stories of how they stayed up. And none of those stories is easy,’ he said.

‘They’re all involving some kind of drama, some sort of revival throughout the season. And yeah, we’re really focused on that.

‘Being a winner is a willingness to sacrifice, to put in work and have consistency. My whole career and life, I’ve only been a winner for one reason – how I conduct myself through the week and how I cross that line, as a manager or a player.’

Kompany is buoyed that goalkeeper James Trafford kept a clean sheet for England under-21s in midweek after a difficult start to his Premier League career. But striker Lyle Foster remains unavailable as his mental health welfare is prioritised.

Burnley remain bottom on goal difference despite Everton’s 10-point deduction but are also only two points from safety with Luton in 17th on six points.
