Football fans from across the world have paid tribute to the legendary Terry Venables who died at the age of 80 on Saturday.

El Tel, as he was nicknamed during his time at Barcelona, was once caught out by a water bottle lid, captured hilariously by TV cameras.

Ahead of a match between Venables' Leeds United side and Bolton Wanderers many moons ago, Sky cameras managed to record the moment the iconic manager went face to face with a water bottle lid.

The video, which was shared again years on by Sky Sports, is just one moment where Venables showed his personality.

As he stood at the end of the tunnel onto the pitch at the then named Reebok Stadium, he went to take a swig of water but quickly realised the lid was still on when the bottle hit his lips.

Instead of looking embarrassed, he cracked a cheeky smile knowing full well the cameramen were all over the incident.

Fans were quick to pay tribute across social media. Writing on X, Vincent Brownlow said: "That’s sad. Venables always seemed alright. Could easily have seen him in some 80s London East End gangster film, alongside Bob Hoskins."

The impact the former Leeds, England and Barcelona manager had on supporters is shown once more through Laura Kenny's tribute on X. She posted: "When I was 9 years old I had to write a poem for school & my dad (9 years into my LUFC indoctrination) decided ‘we’ would write it about Terry Venables’ Leeds side.

"I can still remember it word for word & it always makes me smile. Rest in peace Terry."
