Ten Hag believes Man Utd are on the up ahead of Everton trip

Manchester United hero Roy Keane “let off” Everton star Jordan Pickford after the goalkeeper was beaten by Alejandro Garnacho’s sensational bicycle kick on Sunday. Garnacho had Red Devils fans purring in awe at Goodison Park as the Red Devils defeated the Toffees 3-0 in the Premier League.

Garnacho was handed his third consecutive Premier League start by Erik ten Hag as United went in search of their fifth win in six top-flight matches. And the Argentina winger leapt into action with less than three minutes on the clock as he timed a sumptuous bicycle kick to perfection.

He rose high after Diogo Dalot had crossed the ball into the penalty area. The ball sailed past Pickford in the Everton goal as fans and pundits were able to admire an early contender for goal of the season.

“Absolutely amazing”, Keane told Sky Sports at half-time. “Brilliant – we had a great view of it behind as soon as he went up in the air. Really good movement, a great ball from [Victor] Lindelof, good run from Dalot. Obviously [Marcus] Rashford gets it, little ball down the side, very positive in the first few minutes. The ball goes in and we’re thinking ‘this is in’.

“It’s very hard to talk about it because I’ve never done it in my life. But when he does it, the contact he makes, his skill levels… As soon as it left his foot – we were right behind it. I’m usually critical of goalkeepers – I’ll let him off on this one. A brilliant goal and a brilliant start from United.”

Keane’s former United team-mate Gary Neville had already given the goal his seal of approval during his Sky Sports commentary duties. And the former England international even claimed the strike was better than the bicycle kick Wayne Rooney scored against Manchester City in 2011.

“I can’t believe it”, Neville exclaimed. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a stadium where I’ve seen an overhead kick that good. And I was there for Rooney’s against Man City.”
