Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has been labelled a “waste of talent” following his goal against Everton on Sunday. Former Liverpool left-back Stephen Warnock says the Frenchman will eventually look back on his career at Old Trafford with regret.

Martial rounded off United’s victory over Everton with the third goal in a 3-0 win at Goodison Park. He took his opportunity with aplomb after a fine assist from skipper Bruno Fernandes, having earlier won the penalty which led to United’s second.

It was Martial’s first Premier League goal of the season on just his third start. His contract at Old Trafford expires next summer and it remains to be seen whether United will trigger their one-year option to extend it.

Warnock says the 27-year-old undoubtedly has the talent to have achieved more at United but says the mentality has been missing. He said on Sky Sports News: “He is one of the most frustrating players.

“If I had an ounce of his quality… you’ve got to have dedication, you’ve got to have work rate, you’ve got to have sacrifices, belief. He’s a waste of talent, he really is. On his day he’s unplayable.

“You would struggle to know whether he’s going inside you, outside you, he’s got pace, he’s got skill, he’s got great balance, he’s a good finisher. But half the time he looks disinterested and I think how can you be disinterested with your talent?”

Martial joined United in 2015 and has played over 300 times for the Red Devils. Injuries have played a big part in recent years but there is a general view that he has not fulfilled the huge potential he showed in his early days at the club.
