Tottenham Hotspur star Rodrigo Bentancur has been ruled out for almost three months after suffering a torn ankle ligament in Sunday's against Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old was making his first start for the club since February after nine months out following a ruptured ACL injury at the beginning of the year. His long-awaited return came this past weekend but was short-lived after he was left writhing in pain in the 27th minute after Matty Cash's rough challenge.

While the Uruguayan international initially got up and continued playing, he slumped to the ground after a few minutes forcing his substitution in a game Spurs ended up losing 2-1 despite their first-half dominance.

Following the game, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou told football.london: "It wasn't a great tackle. I thought he started the game so well and I think it was the reason we got a real good foothold on the game. He's such a creative player. It's the last thing we needed, another injury. So disappointed to lose him but we're yet to see the extent of it."

Bentacur's absence is yet another on Spurs' growing injury list which includes the likes of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Richarlison, Pape Sarr, Cristian Romero, Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic.
