Alexis Mac Allister has revealed what sparked Darwin Nunez and Pep Guardiola’s touchline row after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds snatched a dramatic draw against last season's Treble winners late on in their Premier League clash on November 25. But as has been the case between the two sides in recent seasons, tensions boiled over.

This time it was between City manager Guardiola and Liverpool striker Nunez, who appeared to be all smiles before their interaction suddenly became heated after the final whistle. The Uruguayan forward had to be placed into a protective bear hug by Klopp, while Guardiola was ushered away by a Liverpool assistant.

The feisty encounter left viewers itching to find out what the cause was of the bizarre spectacle. And it was unclear until now, with Reds central-midfielder Mac Allister shedding light on the situation.

Mac Allister, who was in close proximity to the bust-up, told Clank!: “Yes (Darwin took it seriously and Pep saw it more as a joke). I don't know if I should tell it but I'm going to tell you (what caused it). Basically, they had a situation.

“I don't know if it was a corner or a cross that [Erling] Haaland headed and the ball went past the goal next to the post. Pep turned around and started saying how lucky we are or something like that.

Who do you think was at fault for the bust-up? Let us know in the comments section.

“Then it goes to the last bit of play, the ball is crossed into the middle and Lucho Diaz wants to head it and they save it. So then Darwin tells him (Guardiola), 'ah, now you are the ones who are lucky'. From there, everything went to s**t. But it was very calm. Nothing serious.”

World Cup winner Mac Allister also said: “That's why I was laughing too. If I see how serious it is, obviously I wouldn't laugh in that way. But nothing made me laugh a little like how Darwin got angry so quickly.

“Apart from that, at the beginning, Pep thought he was doing everything like a joke, and of course Darwin was with him. It had transformed his face a little then.

“It was kind of a little funny, the whole situation, but those are things that stay there. I think they both respect each other a lot, and nothing was wrong at that moment.”

All eyes will be on the next time Nunez and Guardiola meet in the return league fixture at Anfield on March 9. It is expected to be another feisty and hard-fought match, with the rival clubs both eyeing the Premier League title this season.
