Everton fans have torn into Garth Crooks after the pundit claimed the club’s points deduction could be a blessing in disguise.

The Toffees were handed a 10-point penalty last month after an independent commission determined they breached profit and sustainability regulations for the three-year period ending in 2021-22 by posting a loss of £124.5million. The Premier League's permitted threshold is £105m.

The punishment has left Everton and their supporters raging, with protests against the Premier League soon taking place. The Toffees have already appealed against the sanction, although Sean Dyche’s side should still have enough to stay up, with Sunday’s win at Nottingham Forest taking them to within two points of safety.

The result and performance saw former Tottenham winger Crooks name Everton keeper Jordan Pickford in his team of the week on the BBC Sport website. Few Toffees would disagree with his choice, although they have taken issue with his claim that the points deduction could work in their favour.

Crooks wrote: “The speed with which the England number one came out to smother the threat from Anthony Elanga's attempt at goal, accompanied by his scream of delight, that epitomised Everton's determination.” He then added: “This points reduction might prove to be a blessing in disguise for the Toffees.”

Unsurprisingly, Everton disagree with that sentiment, with one fuming: “What a ridiculous comment, I’d rather have the 10 points and be challenging for the top 10. Currently this could cost us £20 million in league places, so what happened to no financial penalty as we had (not have) a rich owner.”

Another blasted: "Blessing in disguise? Get stuffed Garth. This appalling OTT punishment must not be normalised. It was an appalling abuse of process by a supposed independent commission that overstepped its powers.”

A third said: “Gaining an extra 10 points would be a 'blessing in disguise' Garth. Not sure what you're thinking there mate.” A fourth added: “How is it a blessing in disguise when without it we would be 11th and with it we are 18th?”

Another fan mused: “Blessing in disguise? Yes, we'd obviously much rather be 18th than 12th in the league right now.” A sixth said, with a hint of sarcasm: “Yeah feeling really blessed right now to be 18th, Garth.”
