{"id":298771,"date":"2023-12-09T01:24:13","date_gmt":"2023-12-09T01:24:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/?p=298771"},"modified":"2023-12-09T01:24:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-09T01:24:13","slug":"cockerill-to-edge-out-jones-to-take-over-as-georgia-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/rugby-union\/cockerill-to-edge-out-jones-to-take-over-as-georgia-coach\/","title":{"rendered":"Cockerill to edge out Jones to take over as Georgia coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span>EXCLUSIVE<\/span> Richard Cockerill set to edge out Eddie Jones to take over as Georgia head coach&#8230; as he prepares to replace Levan Maisashvili after the Lelos failed to win a game at the World Cup<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Levan Maisashvili left his role as Georgia head coach after a poor World Cup<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Several candidates were in the running to replace him, including Eddie Jones\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span>But former England forwards coach\u00a0Richard Cockerill is expected to take over<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Richard Cockerill is set to beat his former England boss Eddie Jones to the Georgia head coach position after his shock departure from Montpellier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cockerill is in the Georgian capital Tbilisi this weekend to finalise negotiations to succeed Levan Maisashvili as the man in charge of the Lelos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He will also take in the historic European Challenge Cup match between Georgia\u2019s domestic side Black Lion and English side Gloucester on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After his controversial departure from Australia, Jones was of interest to Georgia but he remains likely to return to Japan and take over from Jamie Joseph.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Georgia Rugby president Ioseb Tkemaladze said: \u2018We discussed almost every possible candidate. Whether it was Eddie Jones or others, we talked to almost everyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/08\/23\/78756769-0-image-a-75_1702078295171.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former hooker Richard Cockerill is set to beat Eddie Jones to the Georgia head coach position<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/08\/23\/78756825-0-image-a-76_1702078328739.jpg\" height=\"444\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The pair worked together in Jones&#8217; time with England when Cockerill was the forwards coach<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Richard is coming to have closer talks. We still have to agree on micro-details with him and hopefully we will be able to do that. We are close to reaching an agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If we agree, he will receive a long-term offer. The contract will be four years.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After working under Jones and his successor Steve Borthwick with England, ex-Leicester hooker Cockerill joined Montpellier.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he was dramatically sacked by the struggling French side last month when Bernard Laporte was parachuted in as director of rugby to alleviate the team\u2019s poor form.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Georgia have moved quickly to secure his services and it is understood an official announcement will come soon once the legalities around Cockerill\u2019s Montpellier departure have been sealed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Joe Schmidt was another experienced figure linked with Georgia but the country\u2019s rugby powers feel Cockerill is the best fit for an ambitious rugby nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/08\/23\/78756771-0-image-a-78_1702078337911.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Jones &#8211;
