Liverpool came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon to go top of the Premier League table ahead of Arsenal’s tea-time trip to Villa Park. No team in England’s top-flight have recorded more comeback wins this season than the Reds.

And that is a credit to Liverpool’s mentality. Jurgen Klopp’s men never look down and out in games even when they get off to laboured starts – like they did this afternoon. Much of that fighting spirit comes from the way key players like Mohamed Salah rub off on their young teammates.

Salah is both a mentor and a psychologist to the Reds’ starlets, like match-winner Harvey Eliot and has an open-door policy in place. “He’s a good kid, he’s learning,” said Salah of Elliot. “I always try to push him in the gym. I am always by his side and if he needs to talk, just come to me.”

Although Liverpool dominated possession throughout the game, the biggest chances in the opening 75 minutes fell to the Eagles. Allison was on hand to palm away the home side’s best efforts but he couldn’t keep out Jean-Phillipe Mateta’s penalty in the 57th minute.

Liverpool started to pour on the pressure in response but they couldn’t direct any of their shots on target. That was until Jordan Ayew was sent packing in the 75th minute for what looked to be a very harsh second yellow card.

“I’m absolutely gobsmacked. I don’t think anyone in the stadium, including the Liverpool fans, could see a yellow card coming out there. I’d be fuming with that,” said Rio Ferdinand on commentary.

“I didn’t agree with the red card but this is a part of Liverpool’s season, there is the ability to score goals at critical moments of the game.” Two minutes after Ayew had been shown a red card, Liverpool snatched an equaliser courtesy of Salah before Elliot rifled home the winner in the 90th minute.

“My finish today sums up what I’ve learnt from him,” said Elliot of Salah. “I think if I keep talking about what I’ve learnt and what an influence he’s been, everyone will start getting bored. Since I came through the door, he’s been by my side and looked after me. It’s a pleasure to share the pitch with such a legend, it just sums him up.”
