Others then laid into him with a series of kicks as he curled up on the grass covering his face.<\/p>\n<p>Koca appeared to be incensed at Meler for awarding a 97th-minute penalty kick that allowed visiting Caykur Rizespor to leave the capital with the draw.<\/p>\n<p>The 37-year-old match official was shown standing minutes later with a black eye that had swelled up the left part of his face.\u00a0He later released a statement after being rushed to hospital saying Koca had threatened his life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Faruk Koca punched me under my left eye and I fell to the ground. They also said there is no permanent damage following further facial and neurological tests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the top-flight SuperLig indefinitely suspended matches and a court placed Koca and two others in pre-trial detention for &#8216;injuring and threatening a public official&#8217;, the\u00a0stricken referee received a digital visit from Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.<\/p>\n<p>Koca admitted to Beyaz TV immediately after the match that he had lost control, and that he had no recollection of what he did on the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My brain went crazy,&#8217; Koca said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;My eyesight blacked out! I don&#8217;t remember what I did!&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>He later said in his defence: &#8216;My aim was to react verbally to the referee and spit in his face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;At this point, I slapped the referee in the face.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;After my slap, the referee stood for about 5-10 seconds and then threw himself on the ground.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They immediately removed me from the scene because I had a heart condition.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Fans also invaded the pitch after Rizespor scored the equaliser seven minutes into injury time,\u00a0prompting police to escort the referee to safety.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being on the receiving end of the attack, Turkish media reported\u00a0Meler as initially saying &#8216;Thank you, it&#8217;s my fault&#8217; to the police as he exited.<\/p>\n<p>The match featured eight minutes of injury time and a red card for each side, with Rizespor defender Emirhan Top\u00e7u being sent off in the 95th minute, two minutes before the equalising goal.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that the referee was left with a cheek fracture, while\u00a0Kocaw &#8211; who is reported to have heart problems &#8211; was hospitalised as a precaution, but would later be taken into custody following treatment,\u00a0Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.<\/p>\n<p>Later, it was reported that\u00a0Koca &#8211; who registered a blood pressure of 190 &#8211; had been sent to an Ankara courthouse along with six others involved in the incident. The sport is incompatible with violence. He has also given a statement, according to Turkish media.<\/p>\n<p>They also reported that he had become a father just days ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is not known when matches in the division will resume.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A judicial investigation has been launched &#8216;against those responsible&#8217; for the unprovoked assault, according to Turkey&#8217;s Minister of Justice, Yilmaz Tunc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tunc said the Ankara Police Department was tasked with identifying suspects.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey&#8217;s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ali Yerlikaya, announced that Koca was being treated in hospital under the supervision of security forces, with detention procedures to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Yerlikaya later added: &#8216;I strongly condemn the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler at the end of the MKE Ankaragucu-\u00c7aykur Rizespor match.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Such incidents are unacceptable on our green fields, which are the ground of peace and friendship. Officials in Turkey are often criticised by club managers and presidents for their decisions &#8211; but rarely are they on the receiving end of violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Koca, 59, has been the president of Ankaragucu since 2021.
