Only one Manchester United player would be able to secure a place in either Liverpool or Manchester City’s side. That’s according to former Premier League player and ex-Red Devil Robbie Savage, who has been left disappointed by what his former club has produced so far this season.

Erik Ten Hag’s team climbed up to sixth in the table on Wednesday evening after a brace from Scott McTominay secured a 2-1 win against Chelsea at old Trafford. Former City youngster Cole Palmer was on target for the Blues.

The home win relieved some pressure on United’s under-fire manager, who has had to deny reports this week that he had lost the support of some of his dressing room.

Teg Hag left both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial out of his starting XI for the match. England international Rashford did not come on until the 84th minute and only has one Premier League goal to his name this season.

Captain Bruno Fernandes and midfielder Casemiro are amongst other big stars in the team who have been criticised for under-performing this season, with United’s continued involvement in this year’s Champions League hanging in the balance.

When asked on BBC 606 which United player would get into a top-six side on current form, pundit Savage ruthlessly replied: “No, no the only one I’d say does is Luke Shaw, Luke Shaw.”

Shaw has missed the bulk of the season with a muscle injury that he sustained in a 2-0 loss at Tottenham, but has since returned to the fold and has started United’s last four matches.

The experienced England international performed ably alongside Harry Maguire in the Red Devil’s sorry defeat at Newcastle United last Saturday.

That level of performance will be vital when United host Bayern Munich at Old Trafford next Tuesday in a do-or-die Champions League encounter. The hosts must beat the German champions and then hope that Copenhagen draw with Galatasaray in the other Group A fixture in order to progress to the knock-out stages.
