A punter pocketed over £1,270 from the greatest freeze bet of all time thanks to Luton Town taking the lead against Manchester City.

The Hatters welcomed City to Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon in an eagerly anticipated match-up between the treble winners and a side who were playing non-league football less than ten years ago in front of just over 11,000 fans.

Little was expected of Rob Edwards' side given the gulf in money spent between the two clubs over the last decade, but Luton certainly gave Pep Guardiola a run for his money as he cut an agitated and frustrated figure throughout the game.

Luton really put the cat amongst the pigeons when just before half-time Elijah Adebayo towered above Ruben Dias to head the hosts in front. With Luton the final team left to play on the punter’s acca, he was able to activate the freeze button after placing Luton to win as a full-time result.

The freeze button on SkyBet allows a customer to freeze one of the results in an acca of five teams or more, meaning one leg of the bet can be won before the result is final. This meant that despite City’s second-half turnaround through goals from Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish to edge a 2-1 win, the punter’s bet was still classed as a winner.

A picture of the bet slip which also included Liverpool’s added time win against Crystal Palace, a narrow PSG victory against Nantes, a straightforward 4-1 win for AZ Alkmaar over Almere City and Everton’s brilliant 2-0 win against Chelsea, was posted to social media with the caption ‘Cheers Luton x’ as he was paid out £1,273.81 in winnings.

City’s struggles at Kenilworth left Guardiola visibly furious at half-time and he hit back at concerns regarding their form and title defence with victory at Luton their first win in four league games, he said: "It's normal to say City aren't the same and it's over. That's nice – let’s prove that wrong, (show) that we still want to be there and compete. They’re an extraordinary group of players."
