Manchester United are set to have their transfer budget slashed next summer after they were dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, despite the fact Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to buy a 25 per cent stake in the club and oversee football operations. The Red Devils have been in dire form this season and have now lost half of their matches since the campaign got underway.

United were lacklustre in front of goal during the visit of Bayern as they mustered only one shot on target all evening. And their defeat saw them finish bottom of the Group A table, with Bayern and Copenhagen progressing to the Champions League knockout stages ahead of Galatasaray.

Galatasaray’s third-place finish means the Turkish club will go through to the Europa League knockout round play-offs in the spring ahead of United, who have dropped out of all European competitions.

United’s failure to at least compete for Europa League silverware means they will miss out on valuable revenue during the first half of 2024. And, according to the Manchester Evening News, the club accept their European elimination will harm their transfer budget next summer.

The Red Devils wanted to invest more into the squad last summer but were unable to because of the FFP regulations.

United have spent more than £400million across three transfer windows since Erik ten Hag was appointed manager in 2022. But a whole host of signings have proven to be flops, with the likes of Antony, Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat coming under fire for their woeful performances.

Casemiro, who joined the club during Ten Hag’s first window in charge, enjoyed a fine campaign last season but has faltered this time around, while summer signings Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund have failed to get going in the Premier League.
