Listen to It&#8217;s All Kicking Off\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pierre van Hooijdonk says he cannot imagine England coach Sarina Wiegman taking charge of a men&#8217;s football team as female coaches have &#8216;less credibility&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The former Netherlands, Celtic and Nottingham Forest striker made the controversial comments on a Dutch television show, adding he cannot envisage a female boss in the Premier League either.<\/p>\n<p>His compatriot Wesley Sneijder agreed with Van Hooijdonk, telling another show &#8216;we are going too far&#8217; in forcing women to coach men&#8217;s teams.<\/p>\n<p>It follows Joey Barton&#8217;s comments about female football pundits giving opinions on the men&#8217;s game, which led to a ferocious backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Wiegman has coached the Lionesses to European Championship success and a World Cup final.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/14\/78916177-12859781-F-a-2_1702479443052.jpg\" height=\"402\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former Netherlands striker Pierre Van Hooijdonk said he &#8216;couldn&#8217;t imagine&#8217; Lionesses coach Sarina Wiegman taking charge of a men&#8217;s team and that female manager &#8216;lacked credibility&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/14\/78916801-12859781-image-a-3_1702479475839.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>England coach Wiegman with her UEFA Coach of the Year award back in August<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>Van Hooijdonk was a guest on the Studio Voetbal show in the Netherlands during a debate on whether female coaches should take charge of male teams.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Do you really find that strange? The football world is a cocky world,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I cannot imagine Sarina Wiegman entering the dressing room of a team with guests like Rafael van der Vaart [also on the show].<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Why not? Well, then I wonder if you have ever been in a dressing room. We can say it, right?<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;For me it&#8217;s about a bit of credibility that you have to have towards your group of players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I&#8217;m not saying they have no credibility, but they have less than a man. For me it&#8217;s not about who is better, it&#8217;s just how it is.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Van Hooijdonk added: &#8216;Everything has to be broken these days. I think it can and does happen in many things in society, but a female head coach in the Premier League\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think you really underestimate what effect that will have with regard to an away match with an audience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/14\/78917283-12859781-image-a-13_1702479556243.jpg\" height=\"415\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former Dutch international Wesley Sneijder told another show said football was &#8216;going too far&#8217; with efforts to put women in charge of men&#8217;s teams<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/13\/15\/78917385-12859781-image-a-14_1702479641128.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Dutch coach Wiegman coached England to European Championship success in 2022\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It doesn&#8217;t have to happen for me either. Women and men are equal for me, but I&#8217;m just pointing out what effect it would have on the football world. The football world is not society.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Van der Vaart warned Van Hooijdonk his comments wouldn&#8217;t be well received, to which the former striker replied: &#8216;I&#8217;m not going for the popularity award.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Fellow guest Sherida Spitse, who plays for Ajax Women and the Netherlands national side, said she regarded it as a &#8216;challenge&#8217; to take charge of a men&#8217;s team.<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8216;I hope Pierre is not proven right and I really think it will happen in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sarina Wiegman has qualities that can also work well in men&#8217;s football. You shouldn&#8217;t look at whether someone is a man or a woman, but just purely at their qualities.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But the former Netherlands, Real Madrid and Ajax midfielder Sneijder agreed with Van Hooijdonk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s difficult for me to judge. I imagine I would have a coach. I have nothing against women, but we are going too far.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I heard it said that we have to break something now. Why? What do we have to break?<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;If it happens, it will happen, but we are forcing it too much.
