Liverpool strike blow to Premier League title rivals with late win

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has explained his Manchester United worries as the Merseyside giants prepare to host the Red Devils in the Premier League on Sunday. Liverpool have stormed to the top of the table after winning 11 of their 16 matches, while United are in sixth place after already losing seven times.

United have suffered defeat in half their matches in all competitions this season and have come under fire for their dismal displays. And Klopp believes the 13-time Premier League champions could pose his side more of a threat because of the negative attention they have received.

“I do not like all this talk around it. It is always like this. The more bad things people say about them, the stronger they will show up,” the German said. “That is always the case. I don’t like that. I don’t know about the situation there. I am interested in our situation.

“It is a home game and we have to show up. We are in our own stadium, we have to create an atmosphere and go for them and not think about anything else.”

United boss Erik ten Hag was unable to prevent his team from being dumped out of Europe on Tuesday night as his side lost 1-0 against Bayern Munich. The result meant the Red Devils finished bottom of their Champions League group and missed out on the chance to play in the Europa League in the spring.

Ten Hag enjoyed a promising first campaign at Old Trafford following his appointment last year but now appears to be clinging to his job. And Klopp, who guided Liverpool to a 7-0 thumping over United at Anfield last season, will be hoping to pile more misery on the Dutchman at the weekend.

“I will make sure from our point of view that we will be 100 per cent focused on the right stuff,” he continued. “But we are human beings and there is a noise around and when I am aware of it that means that there is obviously something going on. It is all fine. We know what it means. No one would expect us not to care. We care a lot. We cannot go nuts before the game already. We have to start the game properly. There is space to improve in our football.”
