Luton have posted an update on the condition of captain Tom Lockyer's condition after suffering a cardiac arrest at Bournemouth.

Lockyer, 29, left fans seriously concerned when he went down in the second half on Saturday. Luton were drawing 1-1 with the Cherries after Dominic Solanke cancelled out Elijah Adebayo's early breakthrough.

Luton's statement on Sunday read: "While our captain Tom Lockyer remains in hospital following the cardiac arrest he suffered on the pitch at Bournemouth yesterday, we understand that supporters are concerned for him and that there is widespread media interest in his condition.

"Tom is still undergoing tests and scans, and is awaiting the results before the next steps for his recovery are determined. We are unable to provide a running commentary on his situation, and request that all media please wait for any updates to be released via the club’s official channels when the time is right.

"We all want the very best for Tom, his partner Taylor and the whole Lockyer family, and politely ask that his and their privacy is respected at this difficult time."

Hatters manager Rob Edwards ran onto the field immediately after Lockyer went down in the 65th minute at the Vitality Stadium. The top-flight outfit released a statement soon after to say Lockyer was responsive by the time he had been stretchered off and was taken to hospital shortly afterward.

However, there is particular concern for the Wales international given this is the second time he's collapsed on field due to a heart-related issue. He was also taken to hospital during last season's Championship play-off final against Coventry after falling to the turf at Wembley.

It later emerged Lockyer spent five days in hospital and underwent surgery for an atrial fibrillation before he was cleared to leave. The National Health Service describes the condition as “an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.”

Saturday's game between Luton and Bournemouth was abandoned after Lockyer's departure, and the fate of the Premier League fixture remains unclear at present. Manager Edwards had tears in his eyes as he applauded the fans while leading his squad off the pitch.
