Chelsea could line up against their own player when they take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup due to a little-known rule about loans.

The Magpies snapped up highly-rated Blues youngster Lewis Hall on a season-long loan in the summer, with an obligation to buy at the end of the season. The 19-year-old will return to Stamford Bridge for the first time this evening when Eddie Howe's side take on Chelsea for a place in the League Cup semi-finals, and he's eligible to play despite belonging to the London club.

Premier League and FA Cup rules state that loaned players are not allowed to play against their parent club, but they're permitted to do so in the Carabao Cup providing the parent club has granted prior permission.

Newcastle secured permission from Chelsea when they signed Hall in August, meaning they'll be able to field him tonight, unlike when they took Mauricio Pochettino's side on in the Premier League a few weeks ago.

The teenager has made seven appearances for Newcastle this season and grabbed a goal in their 3-0 hammering of Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup last month. He played a total of 12 times for Chelsea, with all but one of those appearances coming last season.

Will Lewis Hall come back to haunt Chelsea tonight? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hall, who can play both at full-back and in central midfield, clinched Chelsea's Young Player of the Year award at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. His sudden departure was met with disbelief among fans, particularly as it came just a couple of weeks after the player signed a new long-term deal at the club.

It's speculated that Chelsea's change of heart came as a result of paying more than they were anticipating for Moises Caicedo. The club were locked in talks with Brighton all summer trying to seal a £100million move for the midfielder, but ended up paying £115m to ward off a late hijack attempt from Liverpool.

Newcastle will fork out £28m plus add-ons in order to land Hall, who grew up a Magpies fan, on a permanent basis, and although the obligation to buy clause isn't mandatory, it's understood the club have no plans not to activate it.
