So, there it is.
Not John Cena. Not AJ Styles. Not Triple H, The Undertaker or any of the other greats it could have been.
Instead, when Kurt Angle bows out next month at WrestleMania 35, he will do so against Baron Corbin.
The Olympic gold medallist revealed that he will take on the Lone Wolf in his retirement match as his ‘farewell tour’ hit Chicago on Monday Night Raw this week.
Ahead of his match with Chad Gable, the 50-year-old announced his decision to face Corbin at the Show of Shows.
Former WWE champion Angle will retire after the extravaganza in New York, and fans had been hotly anticipating who he would face.
But just as all signs were pointing towards Shelton Benjamin, Angle announced that he will face the man he claims "has made my life a living hell" over the last year.
Angle’s announcement drew a smattering of boos from those in attendance on Monday night.
As did Corbin’s proclamations afterwards, with him declaring: "I really enjoyed laughing at you and humiliating you as Raw General Manager.
"But it won’t feel as good as dominating you in your very last match."
It is a rivalry which has simmered under the surface over the last nine months or so.
But it hasn’t gone down well with the WWE Universe, many of whom had wanted to see Angle in the ring with somebody – anybody – other than Corbin.
Indeed, even SmackDown Live star Rusev was less than impressed.
Unfortunately, it now looks set in stone.
Here’s a look at an updated WrestleMania 35 card:
