Charles Leclerc red-faced as he ‘forgets’ Ferrari milestone at United States GP

Charles Leclerc was left embarrassed ahead of the United States Grand Prix after forgetting that Sunday’s race will mark his 100th in Ferrari colours. The Monegasque driver was therefore left without a commemorative helmet design for the occasion.

Leclerc joined up with Ferrari back in 2019, making his debut at the Australian Grand Prix after impressing the entire paddock with his performances up against Marcus Ericsson in a stellar rookie campaign with Alfa Romeo Sauber. However, there will be no commemorative design in Austin this weekend.

Instead, the 26-year-old will be donning an American football-inspired design for the latest outing at the Circuit of the Americas with an all-green base and pitch markings etched into the sides of the helmet. On top of the new lid are are words “touchdown in Austin”.

Writing on his social media platforms, Leclerc confessed: “I forgot this was my 100th GP with @scuderiaferrari, so this special helmet design doesn’t make sense but it’s beautiful. Look at that greeeeeeen.”

Leclerc isn’t the only driver to be celebrating a notable milestone in Texas this weekend. Lando Norris will make his 100th appearance for McLaren on Sunday, while George Russell is also making his 100th start in F1 after graduating from F2 as champion in 2019.

Norris was very proud of his achievements in F1 when questioned about the milestone ahead of the race weekend, stating: “Not many people in F1 get to stay for 100 [races] but I want to stay for 100 more.

“My best race – the obvious ones, the podium ones, a few races this year have been very enjoyable, very strong. Silverstone as my home race is always enjoyable but I’m still trying to override those by getting my first win.”

Russell also echoed Norris’ sentiment when discussing the 100th race milestone on his recent Beyond The Grid podcast appearance, suggesting: “I really feel like I’m only just getting started.

“There’s obviously a lot of races per season, so they rack up quickly and I don’t feel like I’ve even begun yet. I think I’m performing at a really high level. I’m really happy with my own performance, but I recognise that you need to sustain this performance and be ready for when the car gives you that opportunity.”
