Lando Norris calls for Max Verstappen penalty as F1 rivals ‘don’t care enough’

Lando Norris has claimed that Max Verstappen should have received a grid-place penalty for his blocking incident involving Yuki Tsunoda at the Singapore Grand Prix last weekend.

The Dutch driver was investigated for two instances of blocking during qualifying in Singapore, first for impeding Logan Sargeant in the final sector during Q3 and then for ruining Tsunoda’s Q2 lap.

AlphaTauri’s Japanese driver was rounding turn three on a flying lap when he came across Verstappen’s RB19 parked on the racing line, forcing him to take avoiding action and leaving Tsunoda furious.

Ultimately the stewards decided that reprimands were ample punishment for Verstappen with the reigning two-time world champion avoiding further frustration after suffering a Q2 exit.

When asked about the issue of blocking and Verstappen’s instances, Norris said: “The blocking on track should have been a penalty. He blocked someone… it is not just down to the team.

“I know the team got the fine but at the end of the day, it is down to the driver to look in his mirrors and see if someone [is coming].

“You have got nothing else to do the whole lap other than look in your mirrors and it seems like a lot of people struggle to do that. There should be harsher penalties for blocking people because it ruins your lap, ruins qualifying.

“No one seems to care enough and it has happened a lot this season, it has happened a few times, especially with certain teams.

“But it is down to the driver to look in the mirror. We have nothing else to do other than hit the recharge button and people seem to struggle to do that in F1 which is a surprise.”

Norris was unaffected in qualifying despite the chaos, turning a second-row result on Saturday into a P2 finish during the Grand Prix on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Brit’s team-mate Oscar Piastri, his qualifying session was ruined by Lance Stroll’s massive Q1 shunt.
