Max Verstappen sent offer to quit Red Bull and join F1 rival keen to be his team-mate
Lewis Hamilton has been crowned as the greatest F1 driver of all time by Express Sport readers ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. The Brit is undoubtedly up there with the very best after breaking a huge number of records over the course of his stellar 16-year career.
Hamilton boasts the highest number of Grand Prix victories, pole positions and podium finishes, while he also has the most career points of any F1 driver in history. He also shares the record for the most Drivers’ Championship titles with Michael Schumacher, who claimed the spoils on no less than seven occasions.
A large number of fans believe that Hamilton is the best driver to ever grace an F1 circuit, with Express Sport readers having voted him as the greatest of all time. 49 per cent of respondents to our latest poll chose Hamilton, with just 26 per cent backing Schumacher and another 21 per cent picking Senna.
In a second question, another 36 per cent of voters said that Verstappen has the potential to surpass Hamilton as F1’s greatest talent when the Dutchman’s career is done. He has dominated proceedings over the last two years and recently set the record for the most successive Grand Prix wins by claiming 11 straight victories, a run which ended in Singapore last weekend.

There will always be an intense debate over which driver is the greatest in history and it is widely accepted that there is not one definitive answer. It is difficult to compare those from different eras of the sport, with the early cars driven by the likes of Jim Clark and Juan Manuel Fangio totally unlike the cutting-edge vehicles of today.
Former world champion Jody Scheckter recently said that he puts several drivers in the very top category, as opposed to picking one standout candidate as the greatest of all time. “In his tactics and stuff, he was more like a gentleman on the track than Schumacher was, so I commend him for that. I retired at 30 years old. He wants to carry on. That’s such a personal decision. He’s got to do what he wants to do, if he’s enjoying it.”
Meanwhile, ex-Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger controversially left Hamilton and Schumacher off his own personal list earlier this month, telling Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung: “Verstappen and Senna are unique in the business. They are the two best I have seen in the last 50 years.
“Schumacher and Hamilton are also exceptional drivers. Of course, you should always look at the statistics, they are both fantastic, but Senna died early and Verstappen is still young.”
