  • Barton had claimed Scott and other women shouldn’t work in men’s football
  • There’s a lot of anger at Man United – it’s them against the world! Listen to It’s All Kicking Off

Alex Scott told women that ‘football is a better place with us all in it’ in an indirect response to Joey Barton’s recent controversial comments.

The BBC football presenter was covering the Women’s Super League clash between Arsenal and Chelsea on Sunday when she issued an emotional monologue before the end of the broadcast.

Scott hit back at sexist digs made by Barton where he claimed before the weekend that women shouldn’t be allowed to ‘comment on men’s football because they haven’t played it’.

He also directed individual criticism at both Scott and TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods, along with making a series of other critical views about women being involved in men’s football.

Scott has now issued her most public response to the ongoing feud and praised all the women that work in sport and broadcasting.

‘Just before we say goodbye, to all the women in football, in front of the camera, behind it, the players on the pitch, to everyone that attends games, keep being the role models that you continue to be,’ she said.

‘To all those young girls that are told no you can’t, football is a better place with us all in it.’

Scott had already laughed off Barton’s comments that he made about her earlier in the week and broke her silence on Instagram after the former men’s player continued to lash out.

In the previous video posted on her Instagram, Scott (behind the camera) asked her colleague: ‘Who are you interviewing today?’.

The man in the video joked: ‘It might be you actually’ before Scott chimed in and asked: ‘What we gonna talk about, Joey Barton?’ before bursting into hysterics.

Viewers who had watched the viral clip of Scott’s heartfelt message to women responded with enthusiasm and praised the 39-year-old for being brave enough to speak out on the issue.

One comment underneath the video on X, read: ‘After a week full of sexism and misogyny, the women’s really football community really deserved this. Also the fact that it probably made Joey Barton angry makes it even better.’

Barton’s initial comments took aim at the BBC’s golden girl, with the former QPR and Newcastle midfielder, stating at the time: ‘She hasn’t played in it’.

He added: ‘One is 200 years old and one is about 40 years old… it’s the same rules but football is about a lot more than rules… The games are at two different speeds.

‘I don’t care where you’re from or how many games you’ve played, but you have to have a body of work that is credible to get you there… the world has gone crazy.’

He had earlier responded to a fan quizzing him about Scott’s credentials as a pundit, saying: ‘Fantastic women’s footballer. Decorated in her game. If she’s presenting a men’s game, no problem, anchor the show. But, no, she isn’t qualified to talk with any authority about the men’s game in my opinion.’

Barton is currently unemployed after being sacked as Bristol Rovers manager in October.
