Arsenal sent clear message ahead of January as Man Utd draw with Galatasaray

Arsenal transfer chief Edu will likely have been paying close attention to Manchester United’s thrilling draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday night, with one particular player, Sacha Boey, proving that he has what it takes to go up against a team of Premier League big guns.

Boey played the full 90 minutes against the Red Devils, buoyed by the rapturous support inside Rams Park as Galatasaray twice came from two goals down to earn a hard-fought 3-3 draw.

The right-back had a tough test against the in-form Alejandro Garnacho, who let him know that he was in a game within the first quarter of an hour by lashing in at the near post to build on his stunner against Everton on Sunday.

With United captain Bruno Fernandes occasionally drifting wide to create a numerical advantage, Boey certainly didn’t have it all his own way in Istanbul, and he picked up a yellow card in a fiery first period.

But he showed exactly what he is capable of when given the opportunity to roam forward. Forming a right-sided partnership with former Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech, who scored twice on the night, Boey and the Moroccan caused Erik ten Hag’s side all kinds of problems.

At just 23 years old, the Frenchman also showed tremendous character by thriving in a deafening European atmosphere, and keeping his cool when Galatasaray were forced to chase the game.

Arsenal have two solid right-back options in Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu, but neither player could be considered out-and-out naturals in the position, having previously made their names as central defenders.

A move for Boey could therefore give Gunners boss Mikel Arteta an ingredient his squad is currently missing, and a player in his element while bombing up and down the touchline. Arsenal and United are each reported to have scouted the youngster, who could be available for around £22million.

That price tag makes him more affordable than other right-backs rumoured to be on the market, such as Bayer Leverkusen speedster Jeremie Frimpong.

Boey cut his teeth with Ligue 1 side Rennes before signing for Galatasaray in 2021. The France Under-21 international is now into his third campaign in Turkey, where a close-fought title race is already shaping up in 2023/24.
