Sir Bobby Charlton’s iconic 1966 World Cup semi-final England shirt is set to be auctioned off later this month.

The signed kit was worn by the former Manchester United legend in the Three Lions’ 2-1 victory over Portugal on July 26 1966 – when he scored both goals in front of more than 94,000 fans at Wembley.

England would go on to win the tournament and their first and only World Cup, with a historic 4-2 win over West Germany.

The football icon died at the age of 86 back in October. Sir Bobby, who made 758 appearances for his club and earned 106 caps for his beloved country, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. 

Charlton died after accidentally falling and hitting a windowsill at a care home where he was battling dementia, an inquest has heard.

The former midfielder lost his balance as he stood up from a chair and struck a windowsill and ‘possibly a radiator’, Cheshire Coroner’s Court heard.

Staff performed a full-body check at the time and noted no visible injuries, and initially found the 86-year-old’s mobility seemed unaffected.

But they later noticed swelling on his back and paramedics were called to The Willows in Knutsford Cheshire, where he had been receiving respite care since July. He was taken to a local hospital before being moved to Macclesfield General Hospital.

A chest X-ray and CT scan revealed he had fractured his ribs and was likely to develop pneumonia. Doctors agreed he should be put on end-of-life care at the hospital, the inquest heard. He died on October 21, five days after his fall, at the age of 86.

Following his death, Sir Geoff Hurst – who famously scored a hat-trick in England’s 4-2 victory over West Germany at Wembley – is now the only member of the team still alive.

Charlton’s shirt is being sold by Derbyshire-based Hansons Auctioneers on November 14, with a guide price of £50,000-80,000. 

It was bought for £9,200 at a London auction in 2000 – where it had an estimate of between £10,000 – £15,000. 

David Wilson-Turner, head of sports memorabilia at Hansons, said: ‘England has some of the most passionate football fans in the world and I’m sure many would love to own Sir Bobby’s shirt.

‘It deserves to excel because not only was it worn by one of the greatest England players of all time, it marks a magical moment in sporting history, the one and only time England have won the World Cup.

‘England’s epic 4-2 victory over West Germany took place 57 years ago. Nevertheless, fans constantly reminisce about 1966, the year England was recognised as the best footballing nation in the world.

‘The shirt was originally donated by Sir Bobby to a charity auction after the 1966 World Cup.

‘He autographed it, personally dedicated it to the successful bidder and confirmed he wore the shirt in the game against Portugal.

‘In 2022, Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God shirt’, worn to score a goal for Argentina against England at the 1986 World Cup, sold for a record £7.1 million.

‘That was the highest price ever paid for a piece of sports memorabilia. In honour of Sir Bobby’s passing it would be wonderful to see his number nine shirt exceed all expectations.

‘Hopefully we can give this item the justice it deserves.’

‘I will be forever grateful to a man I was named after, someone I looked up to and was a hero to many around the world not just in Manchester and our country where he won the World Cup in 1966,’ Beckham posted on Instagram.

‘A true gentleman, family man and truly a national hero… Today isn’t just a sad day for Manchester United & England it’s a sad day for football and everything that Sir Bobby represented.’

Sir Geoff Hurst, who played in the 1966 World Cup final with Charlton, wrote: ‘We will never forget him & nor will all of football.’
