Man Utd star Antony makes frustrated gesture on bench as Erik ten Hag booed

Man Utd reveal Premier League record annual revenue but still make loss

Antony’s frustrated reaction said it all as his Manchester United side disappointed during their 3-0 defeat in the Manchester derby to rivals City. Erik ten Hag could hear a loud chorus of boos ringing around Old Trafford as he substituted striker Rasmus Hojlund off while trailing 2-0, with the Brazilian spotted shaking his head at the same time.

Antony remained on the bench as Alejandro Garnacho was brought on for Hojlund, but there was a clear feeling of discontent around the stadium as United struggled to get close to their local rivals in the second half.

Erling Haaland had given the visitors a two-goal advantage, first from the penalty spot after Rodri had been pulled back by Hojlund and then the Norway striker found himself free at the back post to double City’s lead.

Hojlund, who is still without a Premier League goal since his £72million summer move from Atalanta, was then substituted off by Ten Hag and the United faithful let him know what they thought of that decision. Their discontent was clear from the loud boos at Old Trafford.

Haaland then had the opportunity to complete his hat-trick, but having been in on goal he gave team-mate Phil Foden an open goal which the England star proceeded to tap in to put the icing on the cake for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Ten Hag had substituted Hojlund off in the 3-1 defeat by Brighton last month and there were boos on that occasion, but this time around those complaints were magnified as Marcus Rashford moved into a central position, with Garnacho on the left.

Antony did come on with five minutes remaining, with Ten Hag’s substitutions also questioned by club icon Gary Neville. The Sky Sports pundit felt that it was “strange” that Sofyan Amrabat was replaced by Mason Mount at half-time.

The tactical switch saw Scott McTominay drop further deeper alongside Christian Eriksen and in the second period United’s performance dropped dramatically, with Guardiola’s side able to coast towards victory.

Antony’s frustrations shifted from just shaking his head on the bench when he kicked out at Jeremy Doku during stoppage time, which saw the City winger fume back at the Brazilian who was shown a yellow card.
