Mason Greenwood could be set for huge payout as Man Utd hunt for new club

Erik ten Hag assesses defeat to Spurs

Manchester United face an £8million payout if they release Mason Greenwood, a football finance expert claims. Kieran Maguire says the Red Devils face a huge bill if the striker’s contract is to be ripped up.

United want to find a new club for Greenwood to continue his career. A permanent deal or a loan switch is being considered for the 21-year-old, following a six-month internal investigation prompted after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped its own investigation into allegations of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behaviour. Greenwood denied all the charges.

United have so far been short of options. Moves to Turkey and Italy have been suggested as two of very few destinations for the academy graduate.

Should the Old Trafford outfit fail to find a new club for Greenwood, releasing him would be one of their options. However, should they do so, the club would face a mammoth bill of around £8m to pay off his contract.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told Sport Bible: “It would depend on the nature of his leaving. At present he has a contract until 30 June 2025, at an estimated £75,000 a week, so that is the best part of £8 million in wages. If Greenwood was allowed to leave and his contract paid then that would be the maximum potential payout.

“In addition there is a sale or loan fee. Given current market conditions, age, nationality and being chosen to play for his country and his history at the club, a sale price in excess of £100 million plus area is easily feasible, but as impaired inventory – as he will be seen by the Glazers and executives – this price is unlikely to be achieved but still could be in eight figures.

“Given the extensive criticism that the United senior management have received to date in relation to their handling of the affair, a commitment to pay a proportion of any fee the club do receive to domestic violence charities could be one way of earning back some credibility.

“There is also the replacement cost of someone filling the squad gap left by Greenwood. Again this would be in significant tens of millions as a minimum.”

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has already ruled out signing Greenwood for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq. Sharing a screenshot of a report saying his new club would buy the one-cap England international, Gerrard wrote: “Fake News.”
