What Man Utd coaches are privately saying about Erik ten Hag after ‘split’

Erik ten Hag gets huge Man Utd fitness boost as star makes unexpected return to training

Some of the Manchester United coaching staff have discussed steering away from Erik ten Hag’s disciplinarian ways in a bid to overturn the club’s fortunes this season, according to reports. United are approaching a crunch period after a disappointing start to the season disrupted by three international breaks.

Ten Hag is one of numerous figures feeling the pressure at Old Trafford as a new dawn approaches in the form of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s overhaul of football operations.

The Dutchman reportedly retains the support of United’s current hierarchy, as well as incoming key figures from INEOS and elsewhere, once Sir Jim seals a £1.4billion deal for a 25 per cent stake and sporting control.

However, there will be an acceptance that results must improve if he is to remain in the dugout in the long term under new leadership.

And some staff members are said to be taking measures to give United the best chance of building the momentum gained from four wins in their last five Premier League games.

According to the Mail, some coaches have privately discussed easing up on Ten Hag’s strict instructions and instead taking a softer approach to players.

They reportedly hope it will get all players on the same side amid a split in the dressing room that has diminished the strong unity that contributed to a successful 2022/23 season.

The report adds that Ten Hag’s decision to exile Jadon Sancho at the start of September continues to be a divisive matter among his squad.

Some stars welcome the Dutchman’s disciplinarian approach, while others don’t, leading to friction during a troublesome second campaign in the hot seat.

With no international break in sight until March, the upcoming months represent a crunch period in Ten Hag’s reign, especially with Sir Jim and INEOS’ arrival imminent.

United start a week of daunting away fixtures at Everton in the Premier League on Sunday before Wednesday’s must-win Champions League trip to Galatasaray.

Back-to-back home league outings against Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth follow next weekend’s visit to Newcastle United.

Ten Hag has already adapted his playstyle and philosophy multiple times at the start of his United reign, which reaped the rewards last season.

He may have to do it again to align with his coaches during a run of fixtures that could ultimately prove to be sink or swim.
