Jack Draper makes case for Davis Cup place after Italy win

Jack Draper makes case for Davis Cup place after winning the Bergamo Challenger in Italy… and Novak Djokovic’s Serbia await!

  • Draper came from a set down to beat David Goffin 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 in Sunday’s final
  • He is making a timely run into form ahead of the quarter-final match in Malaga
  • While Djokovic’s won the Paris Masters to once again emphasise his dominance

Jack Draper staked his claim for a starting berth in the GB team for this month’s Davis Cup finals week by claiming a first title in what has been an injury-hit season.

The 21-year-old from Surrey came back to beat Belgian former top-tenner David Goffin 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the final of the Bergamo Challenger in Italy, having been ranked too low to enter the Paris Masters.

He is making a timely run into form ahead of the quarter-final match in Malaga against Serbia, where the outcome of the No 2 singles contest may well prove crucial to the tie’s end result.

With Novak Djokovic leading the opposition, Leon Smith’s team will probably need to win the second singles and doubles rubbers to make the semi-finals. The world No 1 emphasised that he remains the sport’s outstanding player by winning Paris on Sunday in what was his first tournament for seven weeks.

After a hard-fought passage to the final, Djokovic comfortably defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-3 to claim his 40th title at Masters level.

His superiority was such that the Parisian crowd, who had been hostile, never really got into the match.

An exhausted Dimitrov became emotional while seated on his chair after the match, and needed to be consoled by the victor, who will next play in Turin’s ATP Finals.
