Novak Djokovic was snubbed by Daniil Medvedev as the Russian waved away his rival after falling during the men’s US Open final. The two men are known to be close away from the court, but Medvedev’s mentality is clear following the brutal exchange with Djokovic.
After falling following a point while two sets down, Medvedev lay on the court as Djokovic approached the net smiling. The Serbian, who will now become the world No. 1, climbed over the net to help his opponent but was waved away.
As Djokovic held out an arm towards the Russian, Medvedev motioned him away before sitting up himself. The exchange showed the strong mentality displayed at the pinnacle of sports, as Medvedev was in no mood to be friendly as he tried to get back into the match.
Medvedev was also seen embroiled in an angry exchange with his team in the stands at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 27-year-old appeared to be in a frustrated mood while he struggled against Djokovic, clashing with his coaches as his game unraveled.
Ultimately, no comeback would come for Medvedev. The Russian showed fight until the end but came up short as Djokovic won 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3 to claim a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title; Djokovic has tied Margaret Court for the all-time Grand Slam record.
After securing championship point following a 21-shot rally, Djokovic won the US Open as Medvedev hit a forehand into the net. The win confirms Djokovic’s place at the summit of the sport, as he wins the final major of the year — and his third of the four Grand Slams — while also returning to the top of the world rankings.
Following the result, Medvedev heaped praise on his close friend, suggesting his dismissal was nothing personal. He said: “I find it amazing that I beat Novak in a Grand Slam final (at the US Open in 2021). At this point, I’d say that’s the pinnacle of my career.”

He added: “We met when I was 500 in the world. He was super kind to me. He treated me as a normal person. He still does. Nothing changed, 24 Grand Slams, nothing changed. I think that’s something great about a person.”
Djokovic dominated in 2023. He won the Australian Open and triumphed on the clay of Roland Garros. His run of dominance ended when he was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz in an epic Wimbledon final, but he returned to form in Flushing Meadows.
The Serbian icon has now won four US Open titles, emerging victorious in 2011, 2015 and 2018 — and now 2023. Djokovic has improved his winning percentage in the final in New York across his 10 finals.
