Martin Brundle shares his biggest ‘car crash’ moments of 2023

Martin Brundle has opened up on his ‘car crash’ grid walk moments with Machine Gun Kelly and Shaquille O’Neal. Brundle’s grid walks have become iconic for some toe-curling encounters with celebrities.

In a staple of Sky Sports’ pre-race coverage, the pundit takes viewers around the grid walk and attempts to have chats with drivers and their celebrity guests. Some give Brundle plenty of their time, talking at length about their passion for the sport.

But many other celebrities refuse to engage. In Brazil, musician Machine Gun Kelly attempted to dodge Brundle’s questions and attempted to get the former driver to play an air guitar. Basketball legend O’Neal was in no mood to speak with Brundle in Las Vegas.

Asked about his most memorable grid walk moments, the 64-year-old revealed that he refuses to watch any of them back. He described his encounters with Machine Gun Kelly and O’Neal as a ‘car crash’, and says his favourite interviews are with the drivers.

“Oh my goodness, what a year it’s been grid walking. I loved talking to Florence Pugh, for example, on the grid in Silverstone and Maria Sharapova in Abu Dhabi, just meeting nice people who are enjoying our sport,” Brundle said in a Sky Sports Q&A.

“And then I’ve had some car crash moments with Machine Gun Kelly and Shaquille O’Neal, whose answer was short and sweet, but nobody’s ever called him short and sweet before, I don’t think.

“I’ve maintained my position of never watching one, so I have no idea. I’ll leave that for other people to decide, but it’s nice to meet nice people.

“But actually I love talking to the drivers as well, because that’s a unique sports broadcasting opportunity. So in the end, it will be quick interactions with drivers that I enjoy most.”

Brundle has also revealed that Mercedes have convinced Lewis Hamilton that he crashes every time he speaks to Sky Sports during the grid walk. Hamilton has rarely encountered Brundle before races, but the journalist has made it his mission to have another chat with the seven-time world champion.

Asked if he thinks he will interview Hamilton on the grid walk, Brundle said: “Yeah, I do, and I will. But then also, somebody convinced Lewis that every time he talked to me on the grid, he crashed.”
