Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou: Undercard pictures
David Adeleye was left fuming by the referee stopping his British and Commonwealth title fight with Fabio Wardley in the seventh round. So much so, that he shoved John Latham halfway across the ring as the experienced official stepped in and waved off the contest.
Fight report
Both men took to the centre of the ring from the off as they let hard thudding shots fly. A solid left hook caught Wardley’s attention in the last few seconds of the opener but the champion came back firing. A powerful flurry backed Adeleye up into the corner before the bell rang to end the first round.
In the second and third, it was more of the same, Wardley stalking and looking to land his trademark overhand right, while Adeleye circled and tried to catch his man coming in. Adeleye’s best shot was a heavy jab but a lack of variety with the lead hand became predictable.
Wardley’s fast footwork left Adeleye lunging over his front foot as he picked his man off from range. For a moment, it looked as though Wardley had Adeleye in real trouble at the quarter-way mark but the challenger unleashed a massive left hook that narrowly missed the target to remind his rival that he was still in the fight.
In round six, Adeleye came flying out the blocks and buzzed Wardley with a stinging left hook on the break after the pair tangled up on the inside. Wardley returned the favour with a big right hand that buckled Adeleye’s knees.
He followed up with a few more thudding shots to his opponent’s body and head in what was his strongest round to that point. Remarkably both boxers stayed on their feet through the halfway point despite eating their fair share of concusive blows.

However, in the seventh, that would all change. A combination by the champion sent Adeleye tumbling to the canvas but the brave Brit beat the count. Realising the position he found himself in, Adeleye attempted to fight fire with fire in order to deter his advancing opponent but during the vicious exchanges, Adeleye was rocked again.
The 26-year-old stumbled backwards on unsteady legs as the referee jumped in to wave off the fight. Adeleye, clearly dazed, protested the stoppage by shoving the third man in the ring.
In the immediate aftermath, he continued his objections. “I’m p***ed the referee stopped it,” he bellowed. “I thought, ‘you know what, give me another ten seconds and I’m going to gauge him’.”
