Katie Taylor regained the undisputed light-welterweight title after beating Chantelle Cameron by majority decision in Dublin (95-95, 98-92, 96-94), leaving fans stunned by ‘fight of the year contender’ on Saturday night.

Having suffered defeat at the hands of her English foe back in May in front of the same home crowd, the Bray Bomber gained her revenge despite a slip in the first round. 

In doing so she became a three-division world champion, a two-division undisputed champion and just the second boxer in history, male or female, to hold all four major titles in boxing simultaneously in two weight classes in the four-belt era. 

Taylor avenging her sole defeat in her professional career came against the back-drop of rioting and looting in the city, although seemingly the entire 13,000-strong crowd were united in their support of the 37-year-old.  

With both fighters trading blows in a contest that went the distance, many fans have taken to social media to claim that it was one of the best of the year, with some hailing Taylor’s sporting relevance in her home country.

On X user wrote: ‘What a fight! Vintage Taylor for 7 and then she held on. Literally. Irish Sporting Legend!!’

Another added: ‘Ireland’s greatest. #TaylorCameron fight of the year. Absolutely phenomenal fight. Incredible…’

One boxing fan claimed the victory harkened back to Taylor’s best year, writing: ‘What a fight. Those early rounds were vintage Katie Taylor.’

A fourth viewer suggested it was a fairly clear win for the home favourite: ‘Fight of the year contender, I have Taylor winning by 3 rounds.’

And a fifth was clearly taken aback by what they had seen: ‘What an unbelievable fight. Hon Katie,’ followed by two Irish flags. 

Taylor was visibly shocked at her achievement following the announcement of the decision, but was already looking a head to a potential trilogy bout – once again in front of an Irish crowd. 

‘Oh my gosh. Two-weight undisputed champion, that sounds very nice! That was the longest six months of my life waiting. This is my real homecoming.

‘Whoever wrote me off doesn’t know very well. Don’t ever doubt me. The last fight you saw the worst of me and the best of Chantelle and it was still a close fight. Tonight you saw the real me and nobody can beat me.

‘Let’s get the trilogy at Croke Park!’

Taylor was overcome with emotion at the end of the fight, before calling for a trilogy fight

Cameron sustained a nasty cut to her forehead and had to be checked by the doctor
