LIV Golf may drop Masters champ as struggling star admits ‘they can kick me out’

Bubba Watson has told his LIV Golf team-mates that he will step aside from playing events if they think he is ‘not good enough’ anymore. The two-time Masters champion captains the RangeGoats who field a team that includes newly-crowned individual champion Taylor Gooch, Harold Varmer III and Thomas Pieters.

But former US Ryder Cup star Watson, now 44, has not been able to rediscover his form since suffering a knee injury that kept him off the course for more than eight months.

The Florida-born left-hander finished 36th out of 48 on the tour’s money list and has only registered one top-ten finish in 13 events this season, at the Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

That didn’t stop RangeGoats from finishing fourth in the regular season team standings, however, resulting in a first-round bye in the season-ending £41m team championship at Trump National Doral.

Speaking to reporters, as per Golf Magic, Watson said: “I told my team if they don’t think I am good enough to play, they can kick me out and we will put another good golfer in my place.

“I am going to play until they kick me out. I love helping the young guys. They are all trying to be better and also better at golf. I get to influence three golfers in life, they are all parents and young dads. I want to be there for them and if they have a problem, I want to be able to help them.”

The season has not been a total disaster for Watson, however. He still managed to collect more than £2.2m in prize money and with a net worth of around £33m according to Celebrity Net Worth, the double major winner is hardly struggling for cash.

Watson has also revealed that he has plans for the RangeGoats that far exceed those of your average golf quartet. The team has a 10-year plan that hopes to create their own golf stadium, training facility and an academy for junior golfers.

He said: “We want a home ourselves. We want our own venue, we want to host an event there just like any sports team.”

Watson turned professional in 2001 and went on to win 12 titles of the PGA Tour including The Masters in 2012 and 2014. He joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf League in July 2022, initially as a non-playing captain and resigned from the PGA tour two weeks later.

He reached No 2 in the world rankings on February 22, 2015.
