The 2026 edition of the Commonwealth Games will not be held in Australia's Gold Coast after the 2018 hosts pulled out.
Last year, fans flocked to Birmingham to watch the Commonwealth Games, which attracted more than 28million viewers to the BBC's coverage of the 2022 edition. And it had been thought the Gold Coast would be set to host the tournament in three years time at the 2026 Games too, after the state of Victoria opted against staging it due to the cost.
However, it has now emerged the city, which is in the state of Queensland, will not be hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, raising serious questions about its future.

And should no city be found as a replacement, it could lead to the cancelation of the games for the first time since the Second World War.
Back in July, Victoria announced its decision to withdraw from bidding for the games due to it 'not representing value for money'. Initial estimations suggested the games would cost £1.4billion, only for that estimation to balloon in cost to over £3bn.

The state of Queensland, who hosted the 2018 games, had suggested they could do a streamlined version of the games for around £360m, but now have no plans to host the 2026 event – or the 2030 one either.
However, despite the alarming news from the Gold Coast, a spokesperson for the Commonwealth Games Federation has re-affirmed they are still looking for a new host city for 2026, and hope to have an update in early 2024.

They said: "Since the sudden withdrawal of Victoria in July 2023 as host of the 2026 Games, the Commonwealth Games Federation has been working tirelessly with Commonwealth Games Associations to find a new host who would be able to step in at such short notice.
"We are in active conversations with a number of potential hosts across the Commonwealth and hope to provide an update on those discussions in early 2024."
