Team Europe’s Ryder Cup stars given orders over potential eco protesters

Luke Donald has ordered his Ryder Cup stars not to tackle 'Just Stop Oil' protesters if they invade the course in Rome.

Campaigners have disputed a host of leading sporting events in 2023 – including Wimbledon, the Ashes, Grand National and world snooker championship. During the Ashes Test at Lords, England star Jonny Bairstow took matters into his own hands by picking up a protestor and carrying him back to the stands.

Bairstow earned huge praise for tackling the protestor in the way he did. But European captain Donald doesn't want any of his 12 players to do the same thing – should a similar situation arise once the tournament starts on Friday (September 29).

Security is on high-alert around the Marco Simone course ahead of the 44th edition of golf's biggest competition. Donald has spoken to his team about the potential for trouble – and admits plans are in place to deal with it.

He said: "I have no idea how likely it is [to happen]. But there's a plan in place for everything. The guys will be told not to interact with the guys, let security deal with that and then we'll carry on."

Donald, meanwhile, admits he won't be following in the footsteps of Thomas Bjorn by getting a tattoo should Europe win back the trophy this week.

Former captain Bjorn had a tattoo of the trophy and winning score inked onto his backside following Europe's triumph in Paris in 2018. But Donald is unlikely to follow suit and he added: "There are no guarantees on the tattoo.

"I certainly don't have any on my body, just to let you in. But I'm sure we can find a suitable way to celebrate if it goes our way on Sunday."
