Christian Horner has explained the context behind Gianpiero Lambiase’s comments after the United States Grand Prix after the Red Bull engineer told Max Verstappen: “I will see you Friday,” after the race.
Verstappen and Lambiase’s relationship is now immortalised in F1 folklore with the pair regularly compared to a married couple thanks to their bickering over the team radio, and this was the case once again in Texas.
The 26-year-old was regularly complaining about the state of the brakes on his RB19 and he also had a moan at Lambiase on multiple occasions for talking to him in the braking zones.
Therefore, when Lambiase came over the radio with a seemingly cryptic message after the race, fans were keen to know the context behind why the iconic engineer wouldn’t be seeing Verstappen until the Friday of the Mexican Grand Prix.

Dialling in to send his congratulations to Verstappen following his 50th win in F1, Lambiase said: “Well done, enjoy the celebrations. I will see you Friday.”
Explaining the radio comments and the context behind Lambiase’s remark, Horner told Sky Sports F1: “Well, you know it was not a code or anything like that, so the marital bliss between the two of them just rolls on.
“He’s had to rush back to the UK so he was rushing to catch a flight so yeah, it used to be Helmut [Marko] that left the track early, now it’s the race engineer that’s straight out after the race.”

Despite Verstappen’s concerns with the brakes and frustration over Lambiase’s timing over the radio, the three-time world champion managed to fend off Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages to seal his third straight Grand Prix victory.
Horner also offered some insight into the brake issues, explaining: “He was managing a brake issue throughout the race. You could hear, he wasn’t happy about the brakes.
“And when you’ve got that issue you are building in a bit of a margin. So I think all his focus was on that and he knew very well what the gap was and he was managing that.”
