Lewis Hamilton has been handed two penalty points on his license for his involvement in the crash between his Mercedes and McLaren’s star rookie Oscar Piastri at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.
The seven-time world champion was making his way back through the field on the alternative strategy when he came across the McLaren of Piastri on the run down to turn one.
Hamilton moved to the outside at the opening chicane to set up a move on the inside through the Curva Grande and into the Variante della Roggia corner complex, putting him in a strong position to get the move done.
Unfortunately for the duo, Hamilton moved too aggressively to the right to close off Piastri’s line with the McLaren’s front left tyre making contact with the Brit’s right rear, sending both drivers into the run-off area.

An FIA investigation later reasoned: “While overtaking Piastri at the entry to turn 4, Hamilton moved to the right in the braking zone and made contact with Piastri while Piastri was moving to the right away from him and was close to the side of the track.”
The outcome of the incident was a five-second time penalty for Hamilton. With two penalty points applied to his license, the legendary Briton’s season tally has now increased to four for the season, moving him closer to, but still within a safe distance of the 12-point maximum.
Speaking about the incident to Sky Sports F1 after the race, Hamilton explained: “It was a bit unfortunate and I misjudged the gap I had with Piastri right at the end. It was totally my fault and I went and apologised to him straight afterwards and we move on.”

There was no bad blood between Hamilton and Piastri after the race, in line with the Brit’s comments. The seven-time world champion was caught on camera approaching the young Aussie in his cockpit with the cars back in parc ferme, apologising for his role in the crash.
Piastri also had his say on the incident after the race, explaining to Sky Sports F1: “The incident with Lewis, he probably just creeped over a bit more than he thought. The stewards gave out their verdict and he has apologised so there is nothing more I can ask for or do at that point.”
The McLaren driver went on to pick up a five-second penalty of his own after he clashed with AlphaTauri stand-in Liam Lawson at the same corner later in the race.
