Martin Brundle disappointed in Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff for Red Bull attack

Martin Brundle has admitted to being “disappointed” with both Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff for not giving Red Bull and Max Verstappen respect for their dominance over the past two years. Verstappen won a record 10th consecutive race at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix with Red Bull now winning 24 of the last 25 races dating back to July last year.

It’s an unprecedented stretch of dominance in F1 that is only set to be extended even further in the coming months. Ferrari, Aston Martin, McLaren and Mercedes have all tried and failed so far to catch Red Bull this year.

Mercedes are currently winning the race to finish behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship with Hamilton and George Russell hoping to close the gap even more next year. Mercedes enjoyed their own stretch of dominance in F1 for eight years between 2014 and 2020, but said last weekend that their success was “different because we had two guys fighting against each other within the team”.

Hamilton also downplayed Verstappen’s record, insisting he’s “no more impressed than when Michael [Schumacher] was leading, when Sebastian [Vettel] was leading when Kimi [Raikkonen] was driving, when Fernando [Alonso] was winning – it’s just the same”. Sky Sports pundit Brundle has now hit back at Hamilton and Wolff for refusing to pay their respects to Red Bull.

“That was one of the best Monza F1 Grands Prix and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he wrote for Sky Sports. “For Max Verstappen to win 10 consecutive races, along with Red Bull taking all 14 races so far this season, it’s truly something to behold.

“What an achievement to faultlessly keep up that level of performance and reliability on many different track layouts and in varying weather conditions, up against mighty opposition. Congratulations to each and every one of them. If a tennis player or football or rugby team for example was so utterly complete and dominant, they would rightly be globally lauded at the highest level.

“As should this pairing be. Sport can and should be tribal, but you must surely also appreciate a level of excellence in others.

“So I was a little surprised and disappointed that Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff played down this achievement over the weekend, because they rightly received their due reverence and appreciation during their years of total domination from 2014 to 2020.

“At the same time Max and Red Bull will no doubt reflect on a few past actions and words which have diluted their current appreciation levels in some quarters. But it’s all to be expected when you put so many intensely competitive people into the same space.”
