  • The McLaren driver lost control heading into Turn 11 in an incident-packed GP

Footage of Lando Norris’ 180mph-crash at Sunday’s Las Vegas Grand Prix has emerged, with the British McLaren driver unable to continue after just three laps of the race.

McLaren had endured a difficult weekend in Nevada, with both team-mate Oscar Piastri and Norris failing to make it past a disastrous first session at the event, which had a trying weekend of its own.

The first practice session lasted just eight minutes before it was called off, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz running over a loose drain cover, which caused irreparable damage to the underside of his SF-23.

As a result he was then handed a 10-place grid penalty after replacing the battery, although he would climb back up the standings to finish in sixth after qualifying second and starting in 12th.

However, there was to be no points for Norris who suffered his first DNF of the season following the high-speed collision with the barriers, and new 360-degree footage shows the impact at a new horrifying angle.

New on-board footage shows the collision in Las Vegas at Turn 11 from a 360-degree angle

His car flipped 180 degrees after the driver lost control heading into Turn 11 on lap three

On-board footage shows the incident, with Norris seeming to re-adjust at high speed when looking to avoid what looks to be a small piece of debris from the car in front of him.

As a result, he loses control heading into Turn 11, before spinning and colliding with the barrier on his right-hand side.

With the sudden change in speed, his car spins so that the whole of the left-hand side is in contact with that barrier.

Norris then continues to spin in a circle as his car hurtles towards the barriers, where he at last comes to a halt.

The Brit was surprisingly unhurt, and was able to leave his car and make his way off the track unassisted at the end of a bitterly disappointing weekend for him on a personal level.

He was of course duly taken to the medical centre, before undergoing precautionary checks at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, but was later discharged.

Las Vegas was the penultimate race of the season, with only Abu Dhabi left on the F1 calendar before the end of the 2023 season.

‘An unfortunate end to our Las Vegas GP weekend. I just bottomed out on the restart, lost the rear and hit the wall.

He continued to spin before carrying on in a straight line right into the safety barriers

Norris can overtake both Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso to take fourth spot with the Spanish pair just five points ahead in the standings heading to Abu Dhabi

The British McLaren star recorded just his first DNF (Did Not Finish) of the 2023 season

‘Not the way we wanted the weekend to end, especially considering the pace looked promising on Oscar’s side,’ said Norris.

‘Big thanks go to the medical staff for checking me over, and to the team for the work they’ll now put in on the car. One week to reset and go again for the season finale in Abu Dhabi.’

Norris is currently sat in sixth in the overall standings with 195 points, just five ahead of Spanish pair Fernando Alonso and Sainz on 200 points, so he has a chance to advance on his current position next week.

However, he will want to be checking his rear-view mirror for Sainz’s Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc on 188 who will want to end what has been a middling season on a high note.
