Nicholas Latifi swapped one extremely fast-paced environment for another.

Latifi, 28, chose to temporarily slam the brakes on his F1 career so he can turn the accelerator on a future career in the twisting and turning world of business. The ex-Williams' driver is currently studying a business degree at the prestigious London Business School so he can lay down the track for another lucrative career.

It has been two years since the Canadian found himself at the centre of the controversy of the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, which saw Verstappen take advantage of the presence of a safety car – that was called by Latifi after he crashed late into the race – by zipping into the lane to get some new tyres, before slicing down Lewis Hamilton's lead and then over-taking the Brit to win his first ever F1 title. Two years after Latifi received death threats for his unfortunate contribution to the race, he is now studying for a new career.

In a statement on Instagram, he wrote: “I decided very early on in the year that I wouldn’t have any racing plans for 2023. It definitely felt very strange not having the same routine I’d been in for over half my life.

"Knowing that I wouldn’t be behind the wheel of a race car this year, I had obviously begun to think of what could be next for me, whether that involved racing or something completely different.

“I decided that for the immediate future, I wanted to take some time and pursue a different avenue and focus on another path. Growing up, I always had a keen interest in the world of business, and I always said it was something I would’ve studied at university had I not gone the racing route.

“With that in mind, and knowing I might be taking a break from racing, I decided that I want to pursue an MBA degree and focus on something that would transform the next phase of my life. An MBA was always something that I had contemplated doing post-racing life, even if that had been into my late 30s and early 40s.”

Latifi did not enjoy too much success in F1 before he decided to pause his career. He has amassed nine career points since his first F1 campaign in 2020.

The Canadian's last race was the 2022 Abu Dhabi GP, which was significantly less controversial than the GP one year previously.
