Helmut Marko has taken another dig at Mercedes’ woes this season by snubbing them as “not a serious competitor” for Red Bull. The Milton Keynes-based team can mathematically clinch the Constructors’ Championship this weekend if Mercedes fail to score any points in Singapore.
It’s been a masterclass of a season for Red Bull in 2023 as they’ve won all 14 races to date with just eight remaining. Max Verstappen has been a class above the rest while Sergio Perez is still well ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton despite his below-par performances.
Mercedes have been the best-of-the-rest so far as they sit second in the Constructors’ Championship. But they’ve still been unable to get anywhere near challenging Verstappen of late with 310 points separating the two teams.
Toto Wolff recently played down Verstappen’s dominance, insisting his records are “for Wikipedia”. His comments came after Lewis Hamilton’s surprise dig at the Dutchman for having weaker team-mates than he has had in his career.

Red Bull advisor Marko has now come out with a brutal response to both Wolff and Hamilton. “This is the difference [between Mercedes and ourselves],” he told Motorsport.com.
“We look at our team to get the best performance out of our own team, and we don’t worry about Mercedes as long as they are not a serious competitor for us. We just look at our own stuff. We do our best and we don’t make up all these kinds of stories like they are doing.”

Verstappen also mocked Mercedes’ run of “losing” to Red Bull over the past two years. He said: “I think it’s very difficult for Mercedes to deal with losing. That’s the problem you have when you’ve won for so many years of course.
“But, at the end of the day, you have to be realistic as well. If it’s not possible [to win], then it’s not possible. You have to be able to appreciate what other teams are doing as well. We did that in the years when Mercedes dominated.
“Back then we just said to ourselves ‘we have to work harder’, because at that time we were simply not good enough compared to them. You can keep saying that the things we are achieving at the moment are not that special, or at least that is probably what they think, but in the end, you just have to focus on yourself because that is the only thing you can influence.”
