Christian Horner lifts lid on 'serious talks' with Lewis Hamilton about joining Red Bull
Sergio Perez has been told that he has “one more chance” to save his Red Bull career despite sealing second place in the Formula One Drivers’ Championship. Ahead of the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, rumours continue to swirl over the future of Max Verstappen’s team-mate.
He secured second spot with a third-place finish at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but still has less than half the amount of points of Verstappen overall. Perez has picked up two race wins this season, with Verstappen claiming 18 while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was victorious in Singapore.
Perez has one more year left on his contract with Christian Horner’s side, but several drivers continue to be linked with his position. The team principal even recently confirmed that Lewis Hamilton enquired about a role with the team.
Perez has been warned by ex-Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos that he was “lucky” Hamilton and Charles Leclerc’s poor seasons enabled him to finish second and he has one more season to prove his worth to the team.

“What needs to be done in the winter months is how to prevent another season like this,” Doornbos told Motorsport.com. “Because the luck that Perez had this year is that the competition dropped points.
“If Hamilton had had a better season or perhaps Leclerc, he probably wouldn’t have finished second in the championship and then you end up third or fourth. Now he could have a bad season and still come second in the World Championship.
“New year, new round. You get one more chance, but you have to be more consistent. You have to be more constant. If Max wins everything, then you [Perez] be at least third. They already know that he will not be second by default. And whether they will even get another year like this remains to be seen.”

Perez has received public backing from Horner, however, having helped seal Red Bull’s first-ever one-two in the Drivers’ Championship. “It’s something as a team we’ve never achieved before,” said Horner in Las Vegas. “I mean what more can you ask for from your drivers than first and second in the championship?
“And [Perez’s] form, his pace was right there again today. The last two, three races he’s really been finding his form again. I thought Checo was brilliant today for us, coming from a nose change at the back of the field, coming through to lead the race.
“So unlucky to lose out on second place, but nailing second place in the championship as well. It’s been an amazing season for us and today sort of summed up the kind of year that we’ve been having.”
