Williams have confirmed that Logan Sargeant has extended his contract to drive for the team in 2024. There had been scepticism over whether the American would keep his seat after winning just one point this year.
Sargeant was outperformed by Williams team-mate Alex Albon in 2023. However, there were signs of progress in the second half of the season.
The 22-year-old scored his first point in F1 at the US Grand Prix and then produced a strong qualifying performance in Las Vegas. Williams boss James Vowles hinted that the team would keep Sargeant for another year in a cryptic radio message after Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“Your contribution this year has been excellent. It’s really a proud moment that you’ve grown so much during the season. I’m looking forward to the winter together and many more,” he said.
However, Williams remained coy on Sargeant’s future. He remained the last driver to confirm their place on the grid for next year.
Quizzed on Sargeant’s future later on, Vowles added: “Whatever happens, Logan has been a part of our Academy for many years. And he will always be a part of it.”
He continued: “You can see signs that he is doing what we need to keep the seat. But we are not in a position to do that yet to confirm.”
Williams have now finally confirmed that Sargeant will drive for them in 2024. In a statement posted on their website, the team said: “After his rookie season with the team, which saw the 22-year-old become the first American driver to score an F1 point in 30 years, Logan demonstrated the fundamental speed required to perform at the highest level, building on these foundations race by race, solidifying his place in our line-up.”
Sargeant added: “I am thrilled to be continuing with Williams Racing for the 2024 season.
“It has been an incredible journey with the team so far, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue developing as a driver within such a talented and dedicated group.
“We have exciting plans for the future, and I can’t wait to contribute to the team’s success in the coming year.”
