Dees ‘so much better’ than Pies: Steven May

Before trade period really gets under way, everyone is talking about Steven May’s speech at Melbourne’s best-and-fairest, where he described the hurt at seeing Collingwood win the premiership, saying the Dees are “so much better” than the Pies.

May, speaking at the presentation night after finishing fifth, told a Demons audience: “We lose to Collingwood, and they go on to win the flag it f****** hurts watching that.”

“We’re a better team than them, we should’ve smoked them,” he said.

“To sit there grand final day and watch them hoist the cup, get the medals, I’m sitting there going, ‘geez, our team’s so much better than these guys’.”

The Demons beat the Magpies at their only clash during the home-and-away season, by four points, before losing to the Pies in the qualifying final by seven points.

Inaccuracy played a role in the Demons’ loss, kicking 7.11 to Collingwood’s 9.6.

The Dees went onto lose to Carlton in the semi-final, their second straight sets exit in successive years after finishing the home and away season in the top four.

Magpie flies the nest: Adams asks for trade north

Collingwood midfielder Taylor Adams informed the Magpies that he would like a trade to Sydney on what is likely to be a three-year deal with the Swans.

The 30-year-old made the tough decision to leave Collingwood on the weekend after attending the club’s best and fairest on Friday night, according to a source familiar with the matter who was not authorised to speak publicly. He officially informed the club on Sunday as he told his Magpie teammates of his difficult decision.

Adams, who missed the grand final through injury, had undergone a whirlwind few days after Collingwood’s win as he celebrated with teammates and friends, before he headed to Sydney to be shown through the Swans’ recently opened Moore Park facilities by co-captains Callum Mills and Luke Parker.

Dow selects Saints after six seasons at Blues

Carlton midfielder Paddy Dow has formally requested a trade to St Kilda after six seasons and 73 games at the Blues ahead of Monday’s start of trade period.

The 23-year-old, who was drafted to Carlton with pick No.3 by current Saints list boss Stephen Silvagni in 2017, fought his way back into the midfield this season after outstanding VFL form but could not hold his spot for the Blues’ three finals.

The Saints had their eye on Dow from midway through the season and despite some late interest from Sydney he told the Blues of his decision ahead of the club’s best and fairest count on Sunday night as he seeks more opportunity.
