England vs Samoa team announcement as South Africa may face ban

Rugby World Cup 2023 – Day 17 highlights

The Rugby World Cup pool stage is heading towards a conclusion as we begin to prepare for the knockouts, but there is plenty more rugby still to be played – including tonight’s match between New Zealand and Uruguay. England and Wales have already advanced to the next round, with Ireland and Scotland bidding to join them.

Ireland and Scotland face each other on Saturday in what is set to be a blockbuster clash as both sides can still go through to the knockout stages, while there is still one scenario in which both teams can reach the quarter-finals at South Africa’s expense.

England are set to name their team to face Samoa on the same day, as Owen Farrell and George Ford are set to start together as Steve Borthwick experiments with his side to find new combinations and partnerships for the remainder of the tournament.

While Ireland and Scotland were quizzed over the prospect of them colluding in order to both go through to the next stage, as firstly South Africa boss Jacques Nienaber was asked about the possibility of match-fixing occurring, which he shot down, before then both camps dismissed.

South Africa face ban

South Africa are facing the prospect of being banned from playing under their national flag at the Rugby World Cup as a result of their government’s failure to comply with anti-doping regulations.

They missed the deadline to amend its anti-doping regulations to comply with the latest International Standard Code for Compliance from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Express Sport understands that the appeal window is still open, however, as South Africa could be handed a ban from major sporting competitions.

England team to face Samoa

England boss Steve Borthwick is expected to name his side to face Samoa in the near future.

However, The Guardian has claimed that Owen Farrell and George Ford are set to start together for the first time in over two years.

Manu Tuilagi, Joe Marchant and Jonny May are all also set to be named in the starting lineup as there is no place in the team for Henry Arundell despite his five tries against Chile.
