Ajax score ‘most ridiculous goal of the season’ as ‘keeper makes unique cock-up

Ajax Women couldn't believe their luck after benefiting from the most ridiculous goal of the season so far.

Taking on Excelsior in the Eredivisie, Romee Leuchter stepped up to take a free-kick in additional time while looking for a hat-trick. The score would soon be 3-1 despite Leuchter slamming her shot off the crossbar in bizarre circumstances.

The ball went high in the air and opposition keeper Isa Pothof assumed it would bounce out of play – punching a spare ball from the roof of the net onto the pitch.

Unfortunately for the stopper, the live ball bounced once and the spin took it across the line to complete a victory for the visitors.

Ajax Women swiftly shared a video of the goal to social media with the caption: "You can’t stop us." Which has brought in more than two million views in 12 hours.

One reply read: "Well the category for most ridiculous goal of the season is already closed and wrapped up for 23/24."

A second added: "What was the goalie thinking… or forgot to!"

A third said: "The most bizarre goal keeping I have ever seen."

A fourth reply explained: "For those who can’t understand, she misjudged the air ball assuming it had gone out of play and to start the next play quickly she was grabbing a second ball to kick out and counter attack."

Fans debated over whether the goal should've stood because the secondary ball had just crossed the line to enter the pitch.

FIFA rules state that the referee must stop play if there are two balls on the pitch – but only if it is interfering.

As no one touched the live ball before it bounced into the net, the correct decision was reached as Ajax celebrated the three points to climb to fourth after their opening fixture.
