Alex Morgan lends support to Spain’s Jenni Hermoso, denounces Luis Rubiales

Women’s soccer stars have shown their solidarity in support of Spain’s Jenni Hermoso after she was kissed on the lips by president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales. The incident occurred after Spain beat England in the Women’s World Cup final and has sparked outrage.

Following the incident, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against the 46-year-old who was reportedly going to step down from his role. Rubiales has since refuted the reports and repeatedly screamed: “I will not resign!” in Spanish during a press conference.

“They are not trying to carry out justice,” he added. “They are committing social murder. They are trying to kill me. I am telling the truth here today.”

His actions have since angered fans and players alike, with several soccer stars taking to social media to express their frustrations that he has refused to leave his role.

USWNT star Alex Morgan is one of the players who has reached out to Jenni Hermoso on Twitter to show her support. The two-time World Cup winner said: “I’m disgusted by the public actions of Luis Rubiales.

“I stand by @Jennihermoso and the Spanish players. Winning a World Cup should be one of the best moments in these players’ lives but instead it’s overshadowed by assault, misogyny, and failures by the Spanish federation.”

Morgan’s comments have also been echoed by England forward Beth Mead: “The game, the Spanish players deserve more, no players should have to endure this. It’s unacceptable, and also laughable that these men still are allowed so much power. @Jennihermoso we are all with you”

Former England soccer star and pundit Alex Scott has also expressed her frustration towards Rubiales’s actions. “Women’s sport has never had the luxury of just ‘talking about the sport’ it’s always had to be more and here we are again! World champions/history made & instead of being able to celebrate a dream come true it’s about the fight for basic respect! @Jennihermoso I am with you”

Hermoso’s Spanish teammate and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas has also tweeted her support, saying: “This is unacceptable. It’s over. With you partner @Jennihermoso”

Putellas isn’t the only Spanish teammate to reach out. Spain’s Cata Coll, Laia Codina and Aitana Bonmati have all shown their support, with Salma Paralluelo posting an image of the whole team writing: “with you, @Jennihermoso”

The Spanish prime minister, Yolanda Diaz, has also hit out and claims that Rubiales’ apology was not enough. She said: “We continue to request the resignation of Rubiales, who has dehumanized and assaulted a woman. His excuses are useless at all.”
