Andre Onana one of five Man Utd stars savaged by German press after Bayern loss

Man Utd train ahead of Bayern Munich clash

Five Manchester United stars were savaged during a player ratings article released in the German press following their 4-3 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. The Red Devils struggled against the Bundesliga giants, with two late goals from Casemiro preventing the scoreline from truly reflecting the dominance of Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Leroy Sane opened the scoring for Bayern when his tame effort slipped beneath Andre Onana and trickled into the back of the net, a calamitous error that he publicly apologised for in his post-match press conference. Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane then scored either side of Rasmus Hojlund’s goal, with Mathys Tel putting the icing on the cake for Bayern late on.

Erik ten Hag called for his team to improve after the match, unhappy with how the match panned out. The German press were equally as critical of the performance, with media outlet BILD producing a scathing player ratings report from the night.

The article used a one to six scoring system, with ‘one’ indicating that the performance was flawless and ‘six’ being described as insufficient. Five United players were rated ‘five’ after the match, in a telling review of how a significant chunk of the team failed to perform on the night.

Onana was understandably on the receiving end of the poor rating, as well as centre-back partnership Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof – with the absence of Raphael Varane still having an obvious impact on the backline. Right-back Diogo Dalot also struggled up against Gnabry and was given a ‘five’ too.

Right winger Facundo Pellistri then capped off those that received the worst rating, with the 21-year-old making very little impact over the course of his 81 minutes at the Allianz Arena. With Antony and Jadon Sancho both absent for the foreseeable future, Ten Hag will be hoping that Pellistri has not had his confidence knocked out of him as he will be key in upcoming trips to Burnley and Leicester City.

Sergio Reguilon and Christian Eriksen were given scores of ‘four’ for their ‘passable but still lacking’ displays, with the rest of the team being ranked ‘three’ for average performances.

Having tasted defeat in their last three matches in all performances, Ten Hag will need to spark some life into his squad before this weekend’s trip to Turf Moor or risks pressure mounting on his shoulders as well. The Dutchman was given a rating of ‘five’ as well by BILD, who were left unconvinced by his tactics and team selection.
